The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
