France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the plan and saying there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.

French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and individuals.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French maritime police representative states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.

Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible technique to disable the engines of the vessels.

This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official departed from government.

That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.

Now French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.

Strong winds are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the past.

The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
